A Re-think on Womens Day Celebration

In my candid opinion, this whole issue of Women’s Day should be given a rethought.Women have become more interested in the Fabric, excess drinking and late night return.
The normal routine of conferences, seminars and all what not should instead be transformed to pragmatism. The women should be able to take words to action and engage the men more in their activities.Instead of a conference with more women, men should dominate.this is because violence most at times come from the men,and it is time to sensitize to them the effects of violence on women and the girl child.
The elimination of violence should even start with the so-call Mothers who maltreat either their sisters children or just a relative back at home.Yes,some of these children suffer from the wicked hands of step mothers, cousins, fathers and foster parents. Some of them whom are fed by such persons, are seen as second handed beings.

As Gloria Steinem stated, “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights” .

That is why when i hear women talk about elimination of violence against the woman and the girl child,i feel like reaching out to them to tell them that elimination of such violence should start from the woman,in fact the woman should stop measuring shoulders with the husband, start treating other peoples children like theirs, stop breast ironing, early and forced marriages, educate the girl child and re-examine the results.

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that all the battles have been won for women while many feminists from the 1970’s know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

What are the women celebrating when they celebrate Women’s Day?One question was thus begging to be asked: what did it mean to be a woman? Are they celebrating International women’s Day only to celebrate biological differences?Theoretically, there is no such thing as WOMEN as a category. It’s too big, too vague; it comprises too many variations to really have any theoretical value when building theories. For instance, when one claims that: in times of war, women are always victims, very few would agree with such a broad statement, because in truth, it depends. Sometimes they are, sometimes they are not, and sometimes they are the perpetrators.

We live in a world where everything has value and power, especially ideas. And for me, the simple idea that women are all connected through commonalities that go beyond mere physical attributes is the most valuable and powerful of all. And they do need such powerful ideas, because they  are all, without exception, still fighting for something because they are women. This fight has different intensities for different women.

The beauty of our world today, is that open minds are everywhere, and both women and men are indeed acting as challengers. And that in itself is a reason to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Women’s Day therefore should be a day for women to look at their achievement in fighting for much recognition in the society especially in high positions, as well as educate the grass root woman, the girl child and even on the use of contraceptives, rather than fighting for their ‘Rights’ and organizing money minded seminars.

Happy Women’s Day Celebration.

Woman eeehhh!!
