The Association of student journalists,University of Buea,ASJUB,have celebrated the 20th edition of world Press Freedom Day in a grand style.
The celebration that took place May 3,2013 at the Open Commons of the university of Buea had as guest speaker Mr Nkemngu,Editor- in-chief of the star News paper,who elaborated on press freedom in Cameroon beginning with the 1990 and 96 laws that gave freedom of press.He however said in spite of these laws,the practice of press freedom in Cameroon is to an extend restricted.The guest of honor went to enumerate some instances where press freedom in Cameroon has been neglected.
Also as part of activities to celebrate world press freedom day,the student journalists from the department of journalism and Mass communication,debated on the recent decision by the National Communication Council,NCC,to sanction some media practitioners and their programs.
The Vibrant journalism Club of Government High School Bokwaongo was also present as the students thrilled participants with the famous Platonic Allegory of the Cave.
Other activities included,play-backs,choral singing,cutting of the Press freedom day cake among others.
In attendants were senior JMC lecturers and JMC alumni.
The Buea Chapter of Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists,CAMASEJ celebrated World Press Freedom Day at the Hotel Residence Carlos.It was a heavily attended Occasion with the presence of Senior JMC lecturers and media Moguls.The Buea English speaking journalist discussed principally on Cyber protection and the advantages of the Internet to today’s journalism.
Its Interim president,Ernest Sumelong,Desk Editor at The Post Newspaper said it was a nice thing to commune with senior men in the profession and also bring together the Anglophone Journalists in Buea to discuss issues affecting their profession.
It ended with a Press Lunch.
